I have picked up this book at the bookstore a few times, wondering whether or not I should read it. From what I can gather in your review, the book is fairly mixed; I'm still not entirely convinced that it is something for me (I am sometimes wary of books that analyze writing too much). I think that I will have to do some 'close reading' of my own, reading the first chapter of this book to see if it is a book that I need to add to my own reading list.

Thanks for the great review!

I used to want to write fiction when I was younger and even wrote a few fairly nonsensical short stories. These days, work and various blogs give me as much opportunity to write as I need. I've found reading books about writing to be a great way to get more out of reading.

Hi Shane,

I've noticed you read a lot of books about writing and wondered are you interested in writing yourself? I guess that's a silly question given what you do but are you working on anything fictional?
